A Full Circle Moment
As a theatre photographer, there are some jobs that stand out for more than just the images — they resonate personally. Recently, I had the privelege of photographing Balwearie High School’s production of Chicago at the iconic Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy. This wasn’t just another school show photography assignment — it was a truly special full-circle moment.
The Adam Smith Theatre holds deep significance for me. It’s where I first performed on stage at just five years old, sparking a lifelong love of the arts. Years later, as a student at Balwearie High School, I returned to that same stage to perform in Fiddler on the Roof during a school show. So to be asked to return — this time behind the camera — to photograph a new generation of young performers was an incredibly personal and rewarding experience.
Many of the pupils involved in Chicago were familiar faces from other productions I’ve captured across Fife and beyond. That connection made the evening feel even more special, and it was a joy to see so much young talent thriving under the bright lights of a professional theatre.
From a photographer’s perspective, the production was a dream to shoot. The lighting design was dynamic and high-quality — ideal for live performance photography — and the students’ energy and passion brought every scene to life. Being able to shoot on the Adam Smith Theatre stage again, this time as a professional, felt both nostalgic and exciting.
