The Sound of Music Production Photography
December 2025 began with a very special production photography job for me - capturing Kelty Musical Association’s production of The Sound of Music at Carnegie Hall in Dunfermline. This show was particularly close to my heart, as it starred my wife, Nicola, as Maria von Trapp.
Carnegie Hall has now become a hugely meaningful venue for both of us. Nicola previously performed there as Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera, and returning once again to play Maria meant she had now fulfilled two lifelong dream roles on the same stage.
A Show Close to Home
With that came a little extra pressure for me as the photographer. I wanted to do the absolute best job possible - especially for Nicola, but of course for the entire cast as well. Thankfully, knowing The Sound of Music inside out (as most of us do thanks to the film) really helped with anticipating key moments, emotional beats, and iconic imagery.
That said, this production was one where every element came together beautifully. The orchestra were outstanding, the cast delivered wonderful performances, and the principals were strong across the board. Add to that impressive set design, lighting, and costumes, and it was a genuine treat to see such a high standard of production within an amateur musical theatre setting.
Capturing Something Truly Special
Some of my favourite images I’ve ever taken came out of this show - and yes, a few of those are certainly of my wife. It’s always incredibly special seeing those images shared across social media by cast members once the show has finished, knowing that they’ll live on as part of the memories everyone takes away from the experience.
Fast Turnaround & Full Gallery Delivery
As with all of my theatre work, I delivered 20 edited images within 24 hours of the performance to help the company promote the show while it was still running. Following that, I supplied a full gallery of over 250 individually edited images, which cast members could purchase for £15.
Every image was carefully edited using Adobe Lightroom Classic, ensuring a consistent, professional finish across the entire set.
Photographing The Sound of Music was a joy from start to finish - both personally and professionally - and it’s a production I’ll always look back on with a great deal of pride.
