That'll do Donkey, that'll do...
I recently had the pleasure of once again working with Playhouse Theatre Company, based in Dunfermline, to photograph their latest production — the larger-than-life Shrek the Musical at Carnegie Hall. Having captured multiple shows for this talented company in the past, I can honestly say that Shrek was their biggest and best yet.
Every element of the production was spectacular — from the bold, imaginative costumes to the dynamic lighting and, of course, the outstanding performances. It’s always a thrill to photograph live theatre, but when the production is this vibrant and polished, it becomes something truly special.
As someone who grew up watching Shrek, and still counts it as one of my favourite films, this job had a little extra magic for me. There was something so satisfying about photographing such a familiar and beloved story, brought to life on stage with humour, heart, and incredible talent.
One of the things I really value about working with the same theatre company across multiple productions is the relationships that develop over time. With Playhouse Theatre Company, I’ve built a great rapport not just with the creative team, but also with many of the performers. That familiarity adds a personal layer to the experience — it helps everyone feel more comfortable, which in turn leads to more natural, expressive photographs.
Capturing this production of Shrek the Musical reminded me why I love theatre photography so much — it’s about storytelling, collaboration, and preserving all the big and small moments that make live performance so unforgettable.
