Capturing a Powerful Night for Charity
n the evening of Saturday the 25th of October, I travelled through to Edinburgh to photograph a very special charity event — the LoveOliver Ball, held at the beautiful Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel. This was my first time working with the charity, and I was honoured to be asked to capture such an important and meaningful evening.
A Charity Making a Real Difference
LoveOliver is a Glenrothes-based charity doing incredible work to fund research into childhood cancer and to provide practical, ongoing support to families affected by it. Their annual charity ball is a key fundraising event, bringing people together for an evening of generosity, celebration, and community - all in support of an incredibly important cause.
Capturing the Full Story of the Night
I spent around four to five hours photographing the event, documenting everything from the arrival of guests to the energy on the dance floor later in the evening. The night was expertly hosted by a radio DJ and featured a variety of entertainment, including performances from a ceilidh band, a pianist, a magician, and plenty of fundraising activity throughout the evening.
The event took place across multiple spaces within the hotel, each with its own lighting and atmosphere. This meant constantly adapting to changing conditions - always an interesting challenge, but one that allowed me to create a varied and dynamic set of images that truly reflected the scale and flow of the night.
More Than Just an Event
What stood out most to me wasn’t just the venue or the entertainment, but the people. By the end of the evening, I felt genuinely connected to so many of the guests. There was such warmth, kindness, and shared purpose in the room - a powerful reminder of why events like this matter so much.
I’m absolutely delighted to say that I’ve already been asked back to photograph the LoveOliver Ball again in 2026, and I’m really looking forward to working with this wonderful charity once more.
