A Special Night in Kirkcaldy
This summer, I had the unique pleasure of photographing my very first prom — and even better, it was for my old high school, Balwearie High, held at the beautiful Dean Park Hotel in Kirkcaldy. Having already photographed their school production of Chicago earlier this year at the Adam Smith Theatre, it felt incredibly special to be invited back to capture another major milestone in the students’ journey.
From the moment I arrived for the prom arrivals, the energy was buzzing. Stylish outfits, heartfelt reunions, proud parents, and a sense of celebration that’s impossible to fake — it was a joy to document. One standout moment was managing to fit over 150 students into a single massive group prom photo — no easy feat, but totally worth it for the epic result.
As well as formal group shots, I focused on capturing natural, candid moments that helped tell the story of the night — laughs between friends, proud glances, and the small moments that make events like these unforgettable.
One unexpected highlight for me was reconnecting with some of my former teachers, who were there to support and celebrate with the students. It was a full-circle experience in many ways — seeing familiar faces, photographing students I’d already worked with on theatre productions across Fife, and now documenting the next big step in their school journey.
We’re already in discussions about taking things further next year, with the potential for me to provide official school photography for Balwearie moving forward — something I’d be honoured to do.
